The Colfax Upper Elementary Staff was saddened to learn of the school shooting that occurred on February 14, 2018 in Parkland, Florida. We extend our condolences to the families affect by this terrible tragedy. When a tragedy of this nature occurs, it is natural for a community to inquire as to the safety and security of its own school. Allegheny Valley School District does have a crisis communication plan and emergency protocols which are routinely reviewed and updated. Working with the community is a vital piece to the safety of our students and staff. Thus, a key component in providing a safe and secure environment is if see or hear of a threatening nature, please report it to the school or local police. Parents and community members can assist us with keeping our students safe by continuing to listen and talk with their children. A final safety reminder, all AVSD schools have a visitor management system for which state-issued identification is required at the time of arrival to enter the schools as a visitor.
February seems to be a long month as we push through the winter weather. At Colfax, our students are very busy with not only academics but also extra curricular activities. This month we have Beverley's Birthday Baby Supply collection which provides small birthday gifts to homeless children. High schooler Rachel Halapchuk is working with Colfax Upper Elementary School to organize this collection. Also, Colfax Student Council's Pennies for Pasta begins this month, all monies collected is donated to the Leukemia Society. Congratulations to all the Allegheny Valley School District students who participated in the Seton Hill University Youth Honors Band. Colfax is able to boast of their three students! Also, encouragement to all who tried out - Keep it up!
Also always, please see the details on the flyer on the Colfax Communications Page for Colfax Upper Elementary School related flyers.
During the cold weather, I have encouraged students to cover exposed skin while walking to/from school or waiting for a bus. Students are permitted to wear sweatpants over shorts to school, at arrival can be removed so shorts may be worn in school. Moreover, students are required to have proper cold weather attire to participate in outside recess, weather permitting. During weather related school delays, parents are asked to rely on their best judgement in determining school attendance for their children. For updated weather related school delays and cancellations, please see the main page of the District's website.
