Acmetonia Primary School was awarded a $20,000 grant by Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Center for Creativity (Grable and Benedum Foundations) to
establish Create U, a large, multi-discipline area supports STEAM education at the Acmetonia building. Utilizing the MakerSpace concept,
Create U leads the way to integrate STEAM into the Primary grades.
Create U has been developed in the Acmetonia library for students to explore, create, and express original ideas. The area is divided into places
and linked to curricular areas – Science, Technology, Mathematics, Language Arts, Art, Music, and Engineering- that infuse STEAM learning.
Students have the opportunity to use a variety of manipulatives to support classroom and special subject programs. Teachers, then, are able
to secure the room for those times when the Create U activity matches their curriculum. All places in Create U are mobile and fluid, able to
change according to the curriculum, the elementary program, and District and Create U goals. Staff members are able to transform the places
according to classroom learning. Technology, viewed as a natural tool for learning, is infused throughout the Places.
The project will welcome members of the community and alumni as guests to help educate students on careers, activities, and other topics. Partnerships will play a major role in the development of the space. In addition, all three grant projects will tie together to develop student mentors, collaborations, and connections among students in different grade levels. Cross-curricular and cross-grade level partnerships and activities will be developed, allowing students of all ages to share in learning.
Allegheny Valley is proud to announce the awarding of a $15,000 grant from the ALCOA Foundation to the Create U project. The funds will enable the project to extend learning throughout the building. Equipment carts will be developed to take concepts, materials, and technology into the classrooms for teachers to incorporate into and support the curriculum. The goals for the grant include: 1. Develop/Create a strong foundation for STEM/STEAM learning by securing curriculum support through research development and/or curriculum design via staff; 2. Add mobile components to allow for Create U to branch into classrooms and other areas of the building and grounds. This would include carts, materials and technology equipment to support various STEM/STEAM education components; 3. Increase and supplement equipment and materials to allow for all access for all students during class/lab time.
